How Phantom Cash Works

Phantom Cash is a Solana-based money account inside the Phantom mobile wallet. Its balance is denominated in USD but held as CASH, a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Bridge Building Inc. The virtual Phantom Cash Visa spends that CASH balance online, in apps and at physical merchants through Apple Pay or Google Pay.

The card is not a direct “spend any token” product. Users first move value into the dedicated Cash account. They can swap supported Solana tokens into CASH, fund through a bank or payment card, receive direct deposits or transfer CASH from another wallet. Purchases then draw from the CASH balance.

This structure preserves meaningful self-custody. Phantom says the Cash account is a separate Solana address tied to the user's profile, and the CASH tokens remain onchain rather than in a Phantom-controlled bank account. A user can move CASH to the main Phantom wallet or another Solana address without closing the card account. Card authorization, disputes, bank transfers and Visa settlement still depend on Phantom, Bridge, Lead Bank, Galileo and other programme partners.

Card Availability and KYC

Phantom moved beyond the original invitation-only rollout on March 31, 2026, when it announced open U.S. access to funding and the virtual debit card. The current setup guide tells approved users to open the Cash tab, complete verification and activate the card. The parent card should therefore be treated as available rather than waitlist-only.

Access is not perfectly uniform. Phantom's current Cash page and onboarding guide say the offchain features are available in the United States except New York. A separate verification help article says both New York and Alaska are excluded, and the troubleshooting page acknowledges that some otherwise eligible users can still see “Coming soon.” The safest interpretation is that the card is live for most eligible U.S. residents, with New York excluded, Alaska still uncertain or restricted, and account-specific rollout controls possible.

Identity verification is required for the debit card, bank deposits, bank withdrawals and direct deposit. Users provide a U.S. phone number, legal name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, government ID and face scan. Verification is handled by Link, a Stripe company. Phantom says it receives the status rather than the identity documents, although Cash partners can retain data under their own policies.

The current product is a virtual card. A physical card was announced as coming later during the 2025 launch, but current activation instructions document only the virtual card and do not publish a physical-order process or delivery date.

Fees and Funding

The current fee schedule is more nuanced than the early “no fees” launch messaging. U.S. card purchases and virtual-card issuance are free, but funding and moving CASH can incur different charges depending on the rail.

Card and account fees

Action Current Phantom fee
Virtual card issuance Free
Monthly / annual card fee $0
U.S. purchase Free
International purchase Variable; shown before confirmation
ATM withdrawal Not supported
Send to a Phantom username Free
Send to a Solana address $0.10

The old fixed international-purchase figure of 1% plus $0.30 is no longer supported by Phantom's current fee page. International fees may apply, but Phantom now says the amount is shown before confirmation. A user should inspect the live quote instead of assuming a fixed percentage.

Funding and withdrawal fees

Funding or withdrawal action Current fee
Swap USDC, USDT, USDG or PYUSD into Cash Free
Swap another Solana token into Cash 0.85%
Swap CASH back to a supported stablecoin 0.85%
Swap CASH to another Solana token 0.85%
Withdraw CASH to the main Phantom wallet Free
Add cash by debit card or Apple Pay 1.75%
Add cash by credit card 3.50%
Direct deposit / ACH into Cash 0.30%
Domestic wire into Cash 1.00%
Standard ACH withdrawal Free
Fast ACH withdrawal $1 + 0.75%; minimum $1.50, maximum $25

These figures show why “free bank transfers” is too broad. Phantom's March open-access announcement used no-fee language, while the later dedicated fee page publishes 0.3% for ACH/direct-deposit funding and 1% for domestic wire funding. The dedicated fee table is the better source for a current cost decision.

Bank, debit-card and Apple Pay deposits are subject to account-specific rolling seven-day limits. Large transfers can use the virtual account details, but exact limits depend on the account. Standard ACH withdrawals normally arrive the next business day; fast withdrawals can arrive the same business day before the cutoff.

Limits and Card Restrictions

The default daily purchase limit is $2,000. Users can ask Phantom Support to increase it to $5,000. The current help material does not publish a universal monthly purchase cap or a separate higher per-transaction ceiling, so the app and support response control the usable amount.

ATM withdrawals and cash advances are not supported. Phantom also blocks several merchant categories for regulatory and fraud-prevention reasons:

  • gambling, lotteries and betting;
  • cryptocurrency or foreign-currency purchases;
  • gift cards and prepaid-card reloads;
  • wires, remittances and other money transfers;
  • cash advances and ATM withdrawals;
  • certain high-risk merchants, including firearms and telemarketing.

Authorization holds can be larger than the expected purchase. Phantom recommends keeping enough extra CASH for restaurants, hotels and similar merchants; its troubleshooting guidance uses a 20% cushion. Holds usually clear within days but can last up to 30 days for some travel merchants. A declined or cancelled payment can therefore temporarily reduce the available balance even when the final charge does not settle.

Rewards and Product History

Phantom does not currently publish a card cashback rate, cap or live cashback terms. The September 2025 launch said rewards such as cashback were coming later, but no current help page establishes that a card-reward programme has launched. The structured cashback rate should remain empty rather than treating a promise as 0% or assigning an invented value.

Phantom's current Cash page also says users can earn passive income by holding CASH. The clearest current help documentation describes moving CASH into the main wallet and using third-party Solana applications such as Kamino. Those DeFi rates and incentives are controlled by the external protocol, can vary by location and are not card cashback. CASH held for card spending should not be assumed to earn a guaranteed APY.

The rollout history matters because several launch promises remain incomplete:

  • September 2025: Phantom announced early access, a virtual and future physical card, future cashback and future passive rewards.
  • November 2025: the Cash account and onchain transfers became available while card and bank features remained prioritized for waitlisted users.
  • December 2025: virtual-card early access expanded.
  • March 31, 2026: Phantom announced broad U.S. access to the virtual card and bank rails.
  • Current state: the virtual card is live for most eligible U.S. users; no public cashback programme or physical-order flow is documented.

This is not evidence that Phantom abandoned those features, but it is a reason to value only benefits that are usable now.

Self-Custody, Issuer and Stablecoin Risk

The CASH balance is genuinely self-custodial in the important wallet sense. It sits on Solana at an address controlled through the user's Phantom credentials, and Phantom says it cannot reverse or modify onchain transactions. Recovery depends on how the wallet was created: a recovery-phrase wallet can be restored with its phrase, while a Google- or Apple-based wallet relies on the linked account and PIN flow.

Self-custody does not make every part of the card decentralized. Lead Bank issues the Visa, Bridge Ventures manages the card programme, Phantom provides the app and access layer, and Galileo handles disputes. Those providers can decline merchant categories, impose limits, require KYC and disable card functionality. A self-controlled CASH token can still be transferred away if the card programme stops, but Visa spending and bank withdrawals may become unavailable.

CASH is issued by Bridge Building Inc. and is backed by a reserve that can include short-term U.S. Treasuries, overnight Treasury repo, government money-market funds, deposits and tokenized equivalents. Reserve assets are segregated from Bridge's other assets, but CASH holders do not own a direct interest in the reserve. CASH and the card balance are not FDIC-insured deposits. Users retain stablecoin issuer, reserve, smart-contract, Solana and de-peg risk.

User Feedback

Detailed, attributable feedback about routine Phantom Cash card use remains sparse despite the broader Phantom wallet's large user base. Early Reddit discussion mostly focused on waitlist delays, whether KYC would be required and confusion between the Cash account and a normal Phantom account. Those comments predate or overlap the broad U.S. launch and should not be treated as a current reliability sample.

More recent discussions show two recurring friction points. Some users misunderstood funding prices, comparing a 0.3% bank/direct-deposit fee with the 1.75% debit-card fee. Others reported balance visibility, verification or transfer confusion and were directed to Phantom or Link support. These are individual reports rather than representative cardholder research, but they reinforce the need to select the funding rail carefully and understand which Phantom account holds the CASH.

Phantom's own troubleshooting material documents activation prompts that can expire after KYC, unsupported merchant declines, temporary authorization holds and account-specific waitlist messages. A prospective user should activate promptly after approval, start with a modest balance and complete one funding, purchase and withdrawal cycle before relying on it as a primary spending account.

Who It Suits

Phantom Cash is strongest for an eligible U.S. Phantom user who values self-custody more than cashback, already holds Solana stablecoins and wants a free virtual card in Apple Pay or Google Pay. Stablecoin-to-CASH funding is the lowest-cost route, and the ability to transfer CASH back to the main wallet provides a useful exit that custodial exchange cards do not offer.

It is less suitable for users who need cash withdrawals, a physical card, non-U.S. availability, predictable international fees or active card rewards. It can also be expensive when funded by credit card or repeatedly moved between CASH and other tokens.

Top-Up Methods

  • Free route: Swap USDC, USDT, USDG or PYUSD on Solana into CASH
  • Other Solana tokens: 0.85% into CASH
  • Debit card / Apple Pay: 1.75%
  • Credit card: 3.50%
  • ACH / direct deposit: 0.30%
  • Domestic wire: 1.00%
  • Card purchases: Spend the funded CASH balance through the Visa programme

Self-Custody Hybrid Custody

  • CASH balance: Held onchain in a user-controlled Solana account tied to the Phantom profile
  • Recovery: Uses the wallet recovery phrase or the linked Google/Apple account and PIN flow
  • Independent exit: CASH can be transferred to the main wallet or another Solana address without using the card
  • Card dependency: Visa authorization, merchant restrictions, disputes and bank rails depend on Phantom, Lead Bank, Bridge and Galileo

Verdict

Phantom Cash delivers a rare combination: a real Visa spending card attached to an onchain, user-controlled stablecoin balance. The free virtual card, free U.S. purchases, Apple Pay and Google Pay support, and reversible exit to a self-custodial wallet are meaningful advantages.

The cost and feature boundaries must remain visible. Debit-card funding is 1.75%, credit-card funding is 3.5%, ACH/direct-deposit funding is 0.3%, domestic wires are 1%, and swapping out of CASH usually costs 0.85%. ATM access and current cashback are absent, international fees are variable, and CASH is not insured like a bank deposit.

For eligible users, the card is now an available product rather than merely a waitlist entry. The sensible setup is to fund through a free stablecoin-to-CASH swap or the lowest-cost bank rail available, keep only a planned spending balance and retain another card for cash access, blocked merchants or programme outages.
