How the Swissquote Card Works
The Swissquote Debit Mastercard is attached to a Swissquote Global Account rather than a separate prepaid crypto balance. Users can pay from supported fiat balances or select crypto as the card's payment source. For a crypto purchase, Swissquote sells only the amount needed to settle the transaction.
That integration is convenient, but it is custodial. Swissquote Bank holds the fiat and crypto assets, performs the conversion and can approve, decline, restrict or reverse card activity under its banking and Mastercard rules. App controls let the user set spending, ATM and e-commerce limits or lock the card, but they do not give the user private-key control over the assets used by the card.
| Specification | Current position |
|---|---|
| Product | Swissquote Debit Mastercard |
| Network | Mastercard |
| Payment type | Debit card |
| Provider | Swissquote Bank Ltd |
| Custody | Custodial bank account and crypto custody |
| Crypto card assets | BTC, ETH and XRP |
| Mobile payments | Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and TWINT |
| Card controls | App-based payment, ATM and e-commerce limits; card lock/unlock |
Swissquote Bank Ltd holds a Swiss banking and securities-dealer licence and is supervised by FINMA. This is a stronger institutional framework than an unlicensed card-only operator, but regulation should not be confused with self-custody or guaranteed uninterrupted card access.
Card Tiers and Rewards
The three packages share the same basic account and crypto-payment mechanism. Their card format, monthly price, reward rate, ATM allowance and travel benefits differ materially.
| Feature | Light | Bright | Elite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card format | Virtual | Plastic physical + virtual | Metal physical + virtual |
| Package price | Free | CHF 6.90/month; first 6 months free | CHF 39/month |

| Free Swiss ATM withdrawals | — | 5/month | 5/month |
| Free international ATM withdrawals | — | — | 5/month |

| Travel insurance and medical assistance | — | — | ✅ |

Trading Credit is not cash cashback
Swissquote calls its main card reward Trading Credit. It is automatically used against eligible online brokerage fees, cannot be withdrawn as cash, cannot be used for cryptocurrency trades or currency exchange, and expires after three months. The headline percentage therefore should not be valued like unrestricted cash or stablecoin cashback.
Regular purchases earn 0.25% on Light and 0.5% on Bright and Elite. Crypto-funded purchases earn 0.5% on Light and 1% on Bright and Elite. Users who rarely place eligible securities trades may receive little practical value before the credit expires.
Elite gold cashback and travel benefits
Elite adds 0.5% cashback in XAU on all card payments, capped at CHF 25 per month. Reaching the cap requires CHF 5,000 of monthly card spending. Swissquote deducts precious-metal custody fees from the gold balance, so users who do not want to hold XAU can convert it to a fiat currency.
Elite also includes three Priority Pass lounge visits per calendar year, shared between the cardholder and guests. Further visits are charged at the current Priority Pass rate shown by Swissquote. Travel insurance covers specified cancellation, delay, luggage and medical-assistance events, subject to the policy terms. Concierge assistance is included, but the user pays the cost of booked services.
Fees and Limits
The plan price is only one part of the cost. Currency conversion, crypto selling and ATM use can matter more for frequent travellers or crypto-funded spending.
| Fee | Light | Bright | Elite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly package fee | CHF 0 | CHF 6.90; first 6 months free | CHF 39 |
| Early cancellation | Free | Free | Two monthly fees if cancelled within 6 months |
| Card transaction fee | 0% | 0% | 0% |
| FX: 13 main currencies | 0.95% | 0.95% | 0% through CHF 5,000/month; 0.25% after |
| FX: other currencies | Mastercard rate + 1.5% | Mastercard rate + 1.5% | Mastercard rate + 1.5% |
| Weekend/public-holiday FX on Elite's 13 currencies | — | — | 1% |
| Swiss ATM withdrawal | CHF 1.90 | 5 free/month, then CHF 1.90 | 5 free/month, then CHF 1.90 |
| International ATM withdrawal | CHF 4.90 | CHF 4.90 | 5 free/month, then CHF 4.90 |
| Replacement card | Not itemised | CHF 5 | CHF 50 |
The 13 main currencies are CHF, USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, AUD, CAD, SEK, HKD, NOK, DKK, AED and SGD. "No transaction fee" does not mean every cross-currency purchase is free: the conversion rules above still apply.
Crypto-funded purchases also require a crypto sale. Swissquote's current crypto pricing starts at 1% maker and taker for the Standard tier and falls with rolling 30-day trading volume. The rate shown in the account at the time of conversion is the relevant one. A user earning 0.5% or 1% in Trading Credit can therefore still have a net conversion cost, especially when the credit expires unused.
| Limit | Light | Bright | Elite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly card payments | CHF/EUR/USD 10,000 | CHF/EUR/USD 25,000 | CHF/EUR/USD 50,000 |
| Daily ATM withdrawals | CHF/EUR/USD 1,000 | CHF/EUR/USD 2,000 | CHF/EUR/USD 5,000 |
| Monthly ATM withdrawals | CHF/EUR/USD 5,000 | CHF/EUR/USD 10,000 | CHF/EUR/USD 10,000 |
| Contactless without PIN | CHF 80 | CHF 80 | CHF 80 |
Limits can also be reduced in the app. Merchant, Mastercard, compliance and available-balance controls may produce a lower practical limit.
Crypto Payments, Funding and Custody
Swissquote offers many cryptocurrencies for trading, but the debit-card FAQ currently names only Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP for crypto payments. A long list of exchange assets should not be read as a card-spending list.
Users fund the Global Account by supported bank-transfer or account-funding routes. When fiat is selected, the card debits the corresponding balance or converts under the package's FX rules. When BTC, ETH or XRP is selected, Swissquote sells the necessary amount and settles the Mastercard purchase in fiat.
This design avoids manually preloading a separate card wallet, but it creates three practical consequences:
- A crypto payment is a disposal and may create a tax event.
- The live crypto sale fee and market price affect the true purchase cost.
- Swissquote, not the user, controls custody, conversion and card authorization.
Users who value private-key control should keep long-term holdings in a separate wallet and transfer only the amount they intend to place under bank custody.
Availability and Requirements
Light is activated immediately after ordering and is virtual-only. Swissquote does not publish one simple, current all-country Light-card list on its card FAQ; account opening and product access depend on the applicant's Swissquote entity and residence.
The physical Bright and Elite cards are currently advertised for residents of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy, Austria, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Spain, Malta, Monaco, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Greece and Belgium. The Elite-specific requirements list repeats those countries except Greece, so a Greek resident should confirm Elite eligibility in the order flow before relying on it.
Elite requires all of the following:
- A Swissquote Global Account
- Residence in an eligible physical-card country
- At least CHF 100,000 in total Swissquote assets, or the equivalent, when subscribing
- The CHF 39 monthly package fee
The CHF 39 price is a recurring fee, not staking. The separate CHF 100,000 asset requirement is the meaningful qualification gate for Elite access and rewards. Bright's CHF 6.90 price is likewise a subscription fee and does not become a staking amount.
Full banking KYC and AML checks apply. Physical cards normally arrive within three to four days after approval, while the associated virtual Bright or Elite card is available immediately.
User Experience and Feedback
The Swissquote app combines investments, banking and card controls in one interface. Its Swiss App Store listing has a strong aggregate rating, while Google Play is more mixed; those ratings cover the whole banking and trading app rather than the debit card alone.
Card-specific public discussion is limited. In a Swissquote Reddit discussion, Elite users and prospects valued gold cashback, travel insurance, lounge access and the metal card, while others highlighted its high annualised package cost and the limitations of a debit card for hotel or rental-car deposits. A separate 2026 report criticised Bright after a failed flight booking, but a single incident does not establish a universal acceptance problem.
Broader recent Trustpilot, app-store and Reddit feedback repeatedly splits along two lines: some users praise the multi-currency account and organised interface, while others describe slow onboarding, source-of-funds reviews or support responses. These are platform-wide experiences, not proof of a card-specific failure, but they matter because the card depends on the same custodial account and compliance process.
Practical testing is sensible: start with a modest balance, confirm the selected payment source, make a small crypto-funded purchase to see the live conversion cost, and test any hotel, airline or rental-car use before depending on the card while travelling.
Product History
Swissquote launched its crypto-friendly Light and Bright debit-card packages in 2023. Light introduced the free virtual option, while Bright combined a physical and digital Mastercard with higher Trading Credit and everyday banking features.
The Elite metal card followed in 2025. It added gold cashback, lower FX costs on 13 currencies, lounge visits, travel cover and concierge service, but also introduced the CHF 39 monthly price and CHF 100,000 asset requirement. The older Swissquote multi-currency credit-card product is separate from this current debit-card family.
Best Suited For
The Swissquote Debit Mastercard is best suited to existing or prospective Swissquote banking clients who want one app for fiat, investments and occasional crypto spending.
- Light: Best for users who want a free virtual card and can use Trading Credit against eligible brokerage fees.
- Bright: Best for users who want a physical card, free domestic/SEPA payments and a modest Swiss ATM allowance.
- Elite: Best for high-asset Swissquote clients who will use the FX allowance, travel insurance, lounge visits and gold cashback enough to justify CHF 39 per month.
It is less attractive for users seeking self-custody, cash-like rewards, broad crypto card-asset support or a low-cost premium card without an asset threshold.
Top-Up Methods
- Account funding: Bank transfer or supported Swissquote account-funding route
- Fiat spending: Debit a supported account balance or convert under the package FX rules
- Crypto spending: Select BTC, ETH or XRP; Swissquote sells only the amount needed for the card purchase
- No separate crypto-card preload is required
- Check the live crypto sale and FX quote before confirming
Self-Custody Custodial
- Custody: Swissquote Bank holds fiat and crypto balances and controls private keys
- Crypto payment: Swissquote sells only the BTC, ETH or XRP required for settlement
- User controls: Select payment source, set spending/ATM/e-commerce limits, lock or unlock the card
- Provider controls: Account approval, source-of-funds review, crypto conversion, payment authorization, restrictions and disputes
- Recovery boundary: App/account recovery restores access only if Swissquote approves it; it is not independent wallet recovery

Verdict
Swissquote's strongest proposition is not unusually high crypto cashback; it is the combination of a regulated Swiss bank account, multi-currency payments and an optional crypto payment source. Light is the easiest tier to justify because it is virtual and free. Bright can make sense for users who need a physical card and already use Swissquote for daily banking. Elite has the richest benefits, but its CHF 468 annualised price and CHF 100,000 asset requirement demand a realistic calculation of the FX, insurance, lounge and gold benefits.
Before choosing a tier, compare the package fee with the benefits you will actually use, treat Trading Credit at its personal redemption value rather than face value, and check the live BTC, ETH or XRP conversion quote. The card is convenient for a Swissquote-centred financial setup, but it is not a self-custodial crypto card and should not be evaluated as one.
