  • High card limits of $50,000 per day for in-store purchases and $50,000 per day online
  • USD and BTC savings yields are paid daily in Bitcoin

  • The $1,000 membership includes the debit-card programme, a USD account, BTC custody and one LoungeKey visit each calendar year
  • Bitcoin Lightning, USDC, USDT, SWIFT, SEPA, Faster Payments and U.S. bank-transfer rails sit in one app
  • Members can choose an instant virtual card, standard plastic card or premium metal card

Notable Limitations

  • Membership costs $1,000 every year; this is a recurring fee, not staking
  • General everyday cashback ended on July 1, 2026 and was replaced by temporary targeted campaigns
  • Xapo controls the account, Bitcoin keys and card access; compliance reviews can delay or restrict access

How the Xapo Bank Card Works

The Xapo Bank Card is an international debit card attached to a custodial Xapo account. Members can pay from their U.S. dollar balance or choose Bitcoin as the spending source. A Bitcoin-funded purchase converts the required BTC at the time of payment; Xapo publishes no separate conversion fee but applies a 0.29% spread. This is convenient, but it is not spending from a self-custodial wallet and it can create a taxable disposal depending on the user's country.

Xapo combines a Gibraltar-regulated bank account with Bitcoin and stablecoin rails. Incoming USDC and USDT are automatically converted to USD rather than held as stablecoin balances. Bitcoin can move on-chain or through Lightning, while the card spends through Visa in Europe and Mastercard in other supported programmes.

Card Options

The three card formats are not separate subscription tiers. They share the same Xapo membership and account economics.

Feature Virtual Standard Plastic Premium Metal
Included with membership
Online purchases
In-store purchases Via mobile wallet
ATM withdrawals Via supported mobile-wallet ATM only
Physical card
Current general cashback
Summer 2026 taxi promotion Only if a Metal card is also active Only if a Metal card is also active 3% BTC through August 31, 2026
LoungeKey Eligibility can vary by card and region; membership includes one eligible visit yearly

The current fee schedule lists the Metal card issuance fee as $0. Xapo also presents the virtual and plastic cards as available card choices inside the same membership. A member should still confirm which physical format can be delivered to their address before paying the annual fee.

Cashback and Other Benefits

Everyday cashback ended in July 2026

Xapo previously paid 0.2% BTC at SEPA merchants, 0.5% outside SEPA on virtual or plastic cards and 1% outside SEPA on Metal. That general cashback programme ended on July 1, 2026. Those old rates should no longer be treated as a permanent card benefit or used to rank the card.

Xapo replaced it with selected campaigns. The first is 3% cashback in BTC on taxis and rideshares from July 1 through August 31, 2026. It requires an active Metal card, although qualifying payments may be made with any linked Xapo card. Cashback is credited to the BTC account on the fifth day of the month. Xapo says more targeted offers will follow, but no permanent rate or next campaign is guaranteed.

Savings and membership benefits

The card is one part of the wider membership rather than the main source of value.

Benefit Current terms
USD Savings 3.35% variable APY, paid daily in BTC; no lock-up
BTC Savings 0.5% variable APY up to 2 BTC, paid daily; different terms above 2 BTC
Minimum for standard savings yield $20 or 0.000365 BTC
Airport lounge First eligible LoungeKey visit each calendar year free; later member and guest visits $35 each
Referral Current public offer pays the referrer and joining friend $500 in BTC after successful activation; UK residents receive USD
Account support Relationship-manager and in-app support
Other products Stocks and ETFs, Bitcoin-backed loans and a separate BTC Credit Fund, subject to eligibility and additional risk

Savings yield is variable and belongs to the Xapo account, not card spending. The BTC Credit Fund is also a separate investment with a $120,000-equivalent minimum, counterparty risk and withdrawal timing; its advertised return should not be presented as card cashback.

Fees and Limits

Membership and card fees

Fee Amount
Annual Xapo membership $1,000
Monthly membership fee None
Metal card issuance $0 currently
Card purchases $0 from Xapo
Card purchases in another currency $0 FX fee from Xapo
BTC spending conversion 0.29% spread
First replacement each calendar year $0
Additional replacement $25
Card closed and reordered $25
Emergency replacement production $100 plus address-dependent shipping
Unsubstantiated dispute $45
Emergency cash access $120

The annual membership charge applies to the account package and all card formats. It is a recurring fee. There is no token staking, locked-balance or minimum-deposit requirement that converts this fee into staking.

ATM fees

The first $100 of combined ATM withdrawals per month is free from Xapo. Above that allowance, Xapo charges 2% of the withdrawal amount. ATM operators may add their own fee at any level.

Card limits

Limit Published amount
In-store card purchases $50,000 per day
Online card purchases $50,000 per day
ATM withdrawals $2,000 per day
Temporary large purchase Up to $750,000 after case-by-case approval

The $750,000 figure is not a default limit. Xapo must approve a temporary increase.

Selected bank-transfer fees

Rail Fee
Incoming SEPA €0.10
Outgoing SEPA €0.15
Outgoing SEPA Instant €0.20
Incoming UK Faster Payments £0.15
Outgoing UK Faster Payments £0.15
ACH deposit $0.50 + 0.1%
Fedwire deposit $20 + 0.1%
ACH withdrawal $30 + 0.15%
Outgoing SWIFT 0.2% + USD equivalent of £25
Incoming USD SWIFT 0.3%
Incoming non-USD SWIFT 0.8%

These are account-transfer fees, not card top-up fees. Intermediary banks and blockchain networks may charge separately.

Funding and Currency Conversion

Members fund the account before spending. Supported routes include:

  • Bitcoin on-chain and Lightning deposits and withdrawals;
  • USDT on Ethereum and Tron, automatically converted to USD;
  • USDC on Ethereum and Solana, automatically converted to USD;
  • USD, EUR and GBP bank-transfer routes including SWIFT, SEPA, Faster Payments and eligible U.S. rails.

USDC and USDT do not remain as stablecoin balances. Xapo may apply a variable spread when converting them into USD, and outbound stablecoin transfers can include a blockchain fee plus a variable conversion spread. Ethereum and Cardano are offered for trading in some regions, but Xapo does not currently support their on-chain deposits or withdrawals.

Lightning transfers have no Xapo processing fee. Xapo caps the routing charge at 15 satoshis, individual invoices at $1,000 equivalent and the rolling 24-hour total at $5,000 equivalent.

Wider Account Services

The membership fee buys a broader private-banking package, so comparing Xapo only by card cashback understates what is included. It is equally important not to present separate investments and lending products as automatic card perks.

USD and Bitcoin savings

Members can allocate eligible balances to standard USD and BTC Savings. Interest is calculated daily and paid into the Bitcoin Savings balance, where it compounds. Standard savings have no fixed term or early-withdrawal penalty, although the rates are variable and Xapo can change them. The current public rates are 3.35% APY on USD and 0.5% APY on up to 2 BTC. Different terms apply above that BTC threshold.

The mechanism matters: USD interest is paid in BTC, so the payout's fiat value moves with Bitcoin after receipt. Bitcoin Savings yield is subsidised by Xapo rather than generated by lending the regular savings balance. That is different from the separate BTC Credit Fund.

BTC Credit Fund

The BTC Credit Fund targets up to 4% APY by lending pooled Bitcoin to institutional counterparties. It requires at least $120,000 equivalent in BTC, an experience assessment and a minimum 30-day lock-in. Redemptions run on scheduled monthly cycles and can take weeks after a request. Fund fees are reflected in its net asset value.

This is an investment product with credit, liquidity and counterparty risk. Its return is not insured savings, is not available merely by holding the card and should never appear as card cashback.

Stocks, loans and transfers

Eligible members can trade U.S. stocks and ETFs; the current service fee starts at 0.5% of trade value, with regulatory transaction fees on sales. Xapo also offers Bitcoin-backed loans through a separate lending entity, subject to regional availability, collateral and individual terms. Neither service changes the card's $1,000 annual price.

For international transfers, the combination of SEPA, Faster Payments, SWIFT, ACH, Fedwire, stablecoins, Bitcoin and Lightning is a genuine strength. The fee table is not uniformly cheap, however: incoming non-USD SWIFT costs 0.8%, outgoing SWIFT adds a fixed £25-equivalent charge, and U.S. bank withdrawals can be expensive for small amounts.

Countries and Eligibility

Applicants must be at least 18, live in a supported jurisdiction, provide government-issued identification and proof of address, and pass Xapo's compliance checks. Xapo's current public FAQ explicitly excludes residents of:

Afghanistan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Central African Republic, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Côte d'Ivoire, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Myanmar, Nicaragua, North Korea, Palestine, Russia, Serbia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, United States, Venezuela, Yemen and Zimbabwe.

The current rule is framed around residence. The public FAQ does not repeat the older blanket statement that every U.S. passport holder is ineligible. Card format, network and delivery can still vary by region, so passing the country check does not guarantee approval.

Custody, Regulation and Risk

Xapo is fully custodial. It safeguards Bitcoin for members, but users do not hold the private keys. Xapo can request source-of-funds evidence, pause transactions, restrict an account or close a relationship under its compliance obligations. A card freeze therefore affects access to the same provider-controlled account used for spending.

Xapo Bank Limited is regulated by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission as a credit institution under permission number 23171. Xapo VASP Limited is separately regulated as a DLT provider under permission number 26061. Eligible fiat deposits are protected by the Gibraltar Deposit Guarantee Scheme up to £120,000 or the equivalent, while Bitcoin and other crypto assets are not covered by that deposit guarantee.

Security and card controls

Xapo has a long institutional-custody history and describes its crypto storage as fully reserved and protected through deep cold-storage and multi-party controls. Members can freeze and unfreeze cards, change card settings, review transactions and receive activity notifications in the app. Virtual-card details reduce how often a physical card number needs to be exposed online.

Those controls protect against some day-to-day risks, but they do not give the member independent control of the underlying assets. Biometric login, device security and support procedures still sit inside Xapo's account system. A user should enable every available authentication control, keep contact details current and avoid holding the only copy of essential transaction records inside the app.

Compliance and access risk

As a regulated bank and VASP, Xapo conducts ongoing transaction monitoring and can request proof of address, source of funds, wallet ownership or transaction purpose. Large or unusual deposits can therefore take longer than a normal card top-up. If Xapo decides to restrict or close an account, the member may need to complete further checks before funds can move.

This is not evidence that Xapo routinely withholds legitimate balances, but it is a practical difference from self-custody. Anyone using Xapo for an emergency fund should keep another payment method and avoid depending on immediate access to every deposited asset.

This structure gives members a regulated bank relationship and professional custody, but it is not self-custody. The trade-off is especially important for anyone considering keeping a large emergency fund or most of their Bitcoin with one provider.

User Feedback

Public feedback is mixed but not uniformly negative. Trustpilot showed 3.9/5 from 1,127 reviews when checked, with 49% five-star and 31% one-star reviews. App Store ratings vary by storefront; the UK listing showed 4.6/5 from 221 ratings.

Positive reviewers commonly praise:

  • a polished app and straightforward card use;
  • responsive human support and relationship managers;
  • international spending and transfers;
  • the combination of USD banking and Bitcoin access.

Negative reports commonly concern:

  • accounts or deposits held during source-of-funds checks;
  • slow resolution when withdrawals or account closure are involved;
  • the $1,000 annual fee;
  • the abrupt end of general card cashback after some members had renewed;
  • occasional payment-authentication or card-decline problems.

These are user reports, not proof that every member will experience the same outcome. They do show why a new member should test funding, spending and withdrawal with a modest amount before consolidating substantial assets at Xapo.

Top-Up Methods

  • Bitcoin: Deposit and withdraw on-chain or through Lightning; choose BTC as a card spending source
  • Stablecoins: USDT on Ethereum / Tron and USDC on Ethereum / Solana are automatically converted to USD
  • Fiat: Fund through supported SWIFT, SEPA, Faster Payments and U.S. bank-transfer rails
  • Conversion costs: BTC card spending uses a 0.29% spread; stablecoin conversion can use a variable spread; network and intermediary-bank fees may apply

Self-Custody Custodial

  • Custody: Xapo controls the private keys for Bitcoin and the balances used by the card
  • Account control: Members manage cards and transfers in-app, but Xapo can request documents, restrict transactions or close an account under its compliance duties
  • Fiat protection: Eligible fiat deposits may be protected by the Gibraltar Deposit Guarantee Scheme; crypto is not covered
  • Recovery boundary: Losing access to Xapo can interrupt access to both the account balance and card because there is no user-held recovery key

Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Regulated Gibraltar bank plus a separately regulated crypto custodian $1,000 recurring annual membership fee
No Xapo FX markup on card purchases No permanent general cashback after July 1, 2026
Virtual, plastic and metal formats in one membership Fully custodial account and Bitcoin access
$50,000 daily in-store and online limits 2% ATM fee after only $100 of monthly withdrawals
Bitcoin, Lightning, stablecoin and international bank rails BTC and stablecoin conversions can include spreads
Daily BTC payouts on eligible USD and BTC savings Compliance reviews can delay account access or withdrawals
One eligible LoungeKey visit per calendar year Card network, format and delivery vary by region
Relationship support and a 30-day membership refund window Separate wealth products add investment and liquidity risks

The most important comparison is not “3% versus another card's cashback.” Xapo's 3% taxi offer is short-lived. The durable comparison is whether regulated USD banking, Bitcoin custody, high card limits, global transfer rails and relationship support together justify $1,000 every year.

Who Should Consider It?

Xapo is most compelling for an internationally mobile Bitcoin holder who wants a regulated USD account, high card limits, Bitcoin and stablecoin rails, professional custody and relationship support in one membership. The fee can make sense if several of those banking services are genuinely valuable.

It is a weak fit for someone seeking a free crypto card, permanent cashback, self-custody or a simple stablecoin spending wallet. Paying $1,000 each year solely for the card is difficult to justify now that everyday cashback has ended.

Verdict

The Xapo Bank Card is a premium banking card with unusually broad Bitcoin integration, high spending limits and no Xapo FX markup. Its strongest case is the complete account package—not rewards. The annual fee is substantial, ATM use becomes expensive after a small free allowance, and the custodial compliance boundary is real.

For members who already want Xapo's regulated USD and Bitcoin banking, the included virtual, plastic and metal cards are useful global spending tools. For card shoppers primarily chasing cashback, lower-cost alternatives are likely better value after the July 2026 rewards change.
